Organizing Family Time

QUESTION: I have three kids who are all involved in various sports, a husband who is a Marine pilot, and I work part-time. I don’t think our schedules will ever coincide enough for us to have very much family time or any vacation time. What’s a stressed-out family to do?

ANSWER: This takes leadership. So, assume the lead. As the wife of Marine, you know that your husband’s schedule is often out of his or your control. You can only do your best but your aim is correct. A recent study showed that the happiest most well adjusted kids were from families that shared the most family meals together.

Schedule planning takes work and discipline. Start with a family meeting and decide on at least one season when all the kids are not playing any sports. Vote. Choose one off-season and stick to your guns. No exceptions. No excuses. Then, mom and dad have to free their weekends and a week or two of family vacation time. No exceptions. No excuses. You want to be a family and not a group of housemates. Other Marine moms and dads have raised great kids. You should expect no less.
