QUESTION: There are too many charlatans in the martial arts. How can I be sure that I’m learning self-defense from an expert?
ANSWER: Do your research. Ask around. Trust your instincts. Is the instructor more interested in telling you how good he is or how good you can become?
All education is ultimately self-education. As a beginner, alert and aware, you will be learning from many sources.
As a warrior, you’ve already been trained in life or death survival. You want to build upon this base.
Some schools and styles, such as Krav Maga and Muay Thai, emphasize self-defense. Other styles, such as Tai Chi, may be much less aggressive in orientation. What are your objectives? Do you want to become a self-defense expert or win a room full of trophies or just lower your heart rate? You decide and then find the right instructor.
