When you see lightning

When you hear thunder, find shelter. Go inside. In the water, get out. Remove any metal you may be wearing. If you are outside, wear rubber sole shoes. Outside, if possible, stand on a plastic mat. You do not want to be a tall target or to lie down. Squat, tuck your head and fold your arms and legs close to your body. Groups should spread out.

Enclosed vehicles and structures are good, while open golf carts and bus shelters are not.

Do not stand in the open near high objects such as trees, telephone and flag poles. Do not stand near metal fences. In a boat, go into the cabin.

Inside, avoid metal or electronic components.

If you see someone struck by lightning, call 911 and administer CPR. You can move him or her to a safer spot without being electrocuted yourself.
