Treat all snakes as poisonous and leave them alone. Snakes do not target humans. Most bites result from stepping on or being too close to the snake. Do not poke or try to kill the snake.
In a suspect area, be sure you wear thick leather boots and long pants. Be aware that snakes like to lie in the sun. Stay on the trail. If you come upon a snake, back away slowly.
If you are bitten, you want to get medical help as soon as possible. If you think others may be around, yell. If you have a signal, use your cell phone and call 911.
Try to remain calm, sit down and orient yourself. Clean the wound with water. Use soap if available. Do not cover or wrap the wound when may push the venom further into the bloodstream. Keep the bite area below the heart. If you have a snake bit kit, use the pump realizing that this may create more temporary pain.
