QUESTION: I have worked very hard to start my own delivery business. I have good contracts and I have good workers. Here is my problem. My aunt has asked me to hire her son, my nephew, as a driver. I know he has been involved in drugs and he’s lazy. What should I do?
ANSWER: There is no need for long explanations. You don’t have to mention your nephew’s character, but, immediately and clearly, inform your aunt know that you aren’t going to hire him. Period. She may protest. Stand firm. You don’t need to offer excuses. Repeat to her, exactly the same way, very simply that you aren’t going to hire him.
Maybe, the young man does need a second chance but this is not your obligation. You are a businessperson, not a social worker. Your obligation is to your business, your loyal workers and to those who rely on your success.
If you hire him, he becomes your problem. Don’t do it.
